Bakers Complete Dog Food

bakers complete dog food
I’ve changed my Dog Food to Bakers Complete, any comments on how bad it is?

I’ve taken him off Pedigree because of the Yahoo Dog community, what have you got to say about Bakers?

OMG just about the worse food I have ever come across, a cheap grocery brand full of additives and not much more, your dog would be better on Pedigree, although I would never feed it personally.

Bakers is like feeding cheap fast food and fizzy pop and most dogs I see with behavioual problems (9 out of every 10 dogs) are fed on this, which says a lot! Once off Bakers within a week those issues are no longer there , it is the first thing I now ask, BEFORE they book an appointment with me, so I give them time to change foods and reduce any issues before they come and see me and I don’t see any point in charging them for a behavioural consultation or the dog suffering further anxiety by just changing to a super premium kibble or better still a raw diet or even a raw/SP kibble mixed diet.
I just have to deal with the behavioural issues they learned during the time they were on this total rubbish, many of which an owner would ‘put up with’ although that is not neccessary for dog or owner.

Unfortunately because of the advertising budget Purina have and lazy buying, purchasers are easily fooled seeing a pretty picture on a box of Bakers, they don’t do any research into what they give their dogs and it is easy to pick it up with the shopping, Bakers is the top selling brand in the UK…………and we wonder why we have so many anxious, reactive and unhealthy dogs about now
Sorry my internet has just gone down! Yet again grrrrrrr!

This is part of a research paper on dog foods and ingredients, I have put the comments down about Bakers

Bakers have chosen not to list the individual ingredients, and instead have listed them as categories. This does not allow the purchaser to make an informed choice and avoid any undesirable ingredients, such as wheat gluten. Also, many of the more desirable, and expensive, ingredients that they draw attention to in the main descriptions are included at low levels in components that themselves are included in the blend at low levels.
Therefore the overall inclusion of these ingredients in the complete food can be minimal e.g. “Vegetables (minimum 4% vegetables in the green kernel)”).

Cereals are the primary ingredient. Although it is not specified, they are likely to include wheat and maize, and would not be suitable for dogs with a diabetes or skin problem. However, since there is no information the purchaser cannot make an informed choice.

“various sugars”, which are probably included to maintain the soft texture of the “semi moist kernel”. These will certain add unnecessary calories as well as exacerbating any diabetic issues that overweight dogs are prone to. They will also add to the risk of tooth decay.

“synthetic colours, antioxidants and preservatives” in order to produce a high coloured and textured product that is intended to appeal to the purchaser. Since dogs are not attracted to these colours or textures, they are unnecessary and some have been linked to dietary sensitivities, behavioural and health problems.
