Seamed stockings worn only by “a certain type of woman” in the 40s?
I know nowadays seamed stockings/nylons are considered a sexy/provocative look (i.e. they’re not appropriate office attire, etc.), but was this the case in the 30s/40s when the style first came into popularity. I was under the impression that nearly all women (who cared to/could afford to) wore seamed stockings, or was it only “loose” women?
All nylon stockings were seamed in the 40s and all women wore them. They were seamed because a seamstress sewed the ends together to make the stocking. Seamless stockings did not appear until the 50s. During the war, all nylon was used for the military – including making stockings for military women and spies. Seeing a seam on a woman’s leg showed she was properly dressed. During the war, women would use makeup to have their legs appear to be wearing stockings.
