Agility Training – What age should we start?

Hi,

I will be checking with my Vet obviously but at what age is reasonable to start my cocker spaniel at agility training.

I have been told to leave it until she is a year old, we are going to puppy training classes but would love to take her to agility when she is ready, just worried that she could get hurt at a young age.

What age did you start your dog.

1. I started my rat terrier (jumps 16 inches, 15 inches at the whithers so about the same size as a cocker) at 13 months.

2. Some places have a “puppy agility” class which is aimed at getting puppies ready for agility. Look into that.

3. There is a ton of stuff you can do pre-agility and before you start jumping and doing obstacles:
–get clicker savvy
–do obedience
–work on flatwork and circle work (agility without obstacles)
–do tons of work on tricks (which serve as agility warmups, teach your dog you’re the source of fun and you learn how your dog learns)
–start behavior shaping (which will improve your ability to cue behavior, improve your clicking skill, get your dog to focus more on you).

I did puppy kindergarten and obedience 1 & 2 before agility. But if I had to do it over again, I’d have done flatwork/circle work and shaping before agility–I’d have sailed through my courses and started trialing probably 6 months earlier.
