Advantage Dog Flea Treatment
Advantage Flea treatment for cats and dogs?
I was unsuccessful in getting rid of the fleas my cat and dog had on my own. I went to the Vet and bought one of their treatments. They gave me advantage for both of them. It’s the kind you squeeze on their skin right behind their heads. I did this at about 1pm today. I’m still noticing a little scratching from both of them. How long should this treatment take to kill the fleas? And if this doesn’t work what should my next step be?
PS I did treat my house so they shouldn’t be getting reinfected from the furniture or anything.
I use Advantage on my collie (“Lassie”). You need to make sure you get the right “dose” which is based on your cat or dog’s weight. There is one package of Advantage made for cats, and one for dogs. DO NOT INTERMIX THEM – (meaning don’t use the one meant for your dog on your cat and vice versa). For dogs, they make one ‘formula’ for dogs from 0 – 50 pounds. Another (stronger?) formula for dogs over 50 pounds. My dog is a little over 50 pounds (53) so I get the stronger stuff.
She has never had fleas so I use it more as a preventative measure than anything. I put it (like the directions say) behind her neck, between her shoulders, half way down her back, and lastly a spot on her haunches. She doesn’t mind it a bit.
As for how soon it should start clearing up? I’d say no more than 2 to 3 days. The repellant needs to be absorbed into the skin and spread throughout your dog’s system before it takes affect. You can also give your dog a bath anytime after using Advantage, so I would suggest giving it a good bathing and use a recommended flea shampoo as well. Go after the little buggers with both barrels!
If they are still scratching after a week, I’d see the vet. Better safe than sorry. Oh – at the same time you give them a bath, you might as well check for tics as well.
